How to Read Art Like a Book

Some say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Our AP Language class would agree – in fact, they might argue, art should be read! On Monday, September 25, Ms. Plaza's AP Language class took a field trip to the National Gallery to learn more about "reading" visual texts such as paintings and sculptures. Students practiced close reading of a painting, looking at the artist's use of light, shadow, color, composition, and perspective to tell a story. After the tour, the class left asking several important questions about what makes art worth viewing—a question students will continue to explore later in the semester!
