Art with a Message

Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. Last week, 45 US students toured the National Gallery and studied how art speaks as social commentary. The field trip was an extension of the lessons they are exploring in our Helene Berman Seidenfeld Visual Arts Center. Students compared work by Max Ernst, a German Jewish artist, and Kerry James Marshall, a contemporary African American artist, through questions, artist quotes and collaborative creative writing.
